At UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø there is one (Master of Philosophy in Visual Anthropology) of only two international master programmes in the Nordic countries in visual anthropology and ethnographic film. In this seminar we will showcase work produced by both students and staff but also show how a very dynamic, just think of the Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF), cinema environment produces work of global significance, with an acute sense of the importance of cooperation with film environments in the South and particularly with indigenous groups around the world.

14:30 – From Patamban to Florida. A long-term ethnographic film project. Dr. Beate Engelbrecht (Founder and international coordinator of GIEFF and academic member of staff of the Institute of Scientific Film in Göttingen for many years) will give a masterclass on her work with the festival celebrating Jesús Nazareno in Patamban in Mexico and in more recent years also in Florida, U.S.A. This long-term research, based on numerous field trips, has resulted in a number of films and loads of film material, most recently including the film ‘Keeping the Tradition’ (2022), from which she will show excerpts.
